take an iq test

take an iq test

you probably think you're smarter than average. almost everyone does — it's called the dunning-kruger effect. but have you ever actually tested it? probably not, because the possibility of being average (or below) is terrifying.

why you're avoiding it

intelligence is one of the most ego-attached traits in our culture. we build entire identities around being "the smart one." so the idea of taking a test that might challenge that identity feels threatening. but here's the thing — your IQ is what it is whether you measure it or not. ignorance doesn't change reality.

what the number actually means

an IQ test measures certain types of cognitive ability — pattern recognition, spatial reasoning, verbal comprehension, working memory. it does not measure creativity, emotional intelligence, practical wisdom, or your ability to get things done. plenty of high-IQ people are completely dysfunctional, and plenty of average-IQ people build extraordinary lives.

the number is a data point, not a verdict. treat it that way.

the real value

knowing your cognitive profile helps you work smarter. strong in verbal reasoning but weak in spatial thinking? that's useful career information. high processing speed but low working memory? now you know why you need to write everything down.

self-awareness isn't about feeling good about yourself. it's about knowing exactly what you're working with so you can allocate your efforts intelligently.

take the test

find a legitimate IQ test online — avoid the clickbait ones on social media. mensa offers a practice test. there are several research-backed assessments available. take one this week.

whatever the number is, accept it. then use it. intelligence is one tool in a very large toolbox. knowing the size of that particular tool helps you know when to use it and when to reach for something else.

if this resonated, share it with someone who needs to hear it.
