constructive criticism

constructive criticism

everyone around you knows your blind spots. your partner sees them. your best friend sees them. your coworkers definitely see them. they just won't tell you, because honesty is socially expensive and nobody wants to be the one who ruins the vibe.

the feedback desert

you're operating with massive blind spots and zero data. you think you're a great listener, but everyone around you knows you interrupt constantly. you think you're laid-back, but your friends think you're passive-aggressive. you think your work is excellent, but your boss has concerns they'll never voice unprompted.

this isn't their fault. it's yours. because you've never created an environment where honest feedback is safe.

how to demand the truth

the word "demand" is intentional. asking politely gets you polite answers. "am i a good friend?" will always get "yeah, of course." that's useless.

instead, try:

  • "what's one thing i do that annoys you that you've never told me?"
  • "if you had to identify my biggest weakness, what would it be?"
  • "what's something i'm blind to about myself?"

and here's the critical part: when they answer, shut up and listen. don't defend. don't explain. don't get hurt. just absorb it. say "thank you" and mean it. because the moment you punish someone for honesty, you guarantee they'll never be honest with you again.

the ego problem

your ego is a liar. it tells you that you're doing fine, that criticism is just haters, that the problem is always other people. your ego's job is to protect your self-image, not to help you grow. growth requires information your ego would rather suppress.

seeking criticism is the ultimate ego override. it says: "i value getting better more than i value feeling good about myself right now."

start this week

pick one person you trust deeply. tell them you need honest, uncomfortable feedback about one thing you can improve. make it safe for them. listen without reacting. then actually work on it.

the things you don't know about yourself are running your life. it's time to find out what they are.

if this resonated, share it with someone who needs to hear it.
